You can add a platform for looking and shooting over or you can turn it in to a gate. I will focus on turning it in to a gate to answer the OP's question. Now is when you need the wire and pliers. Place the wire in the fence inventory and pull out your pliers. Now you get the option to make it a gate. Hope this helps.

Instead of sawing through a lock and/or breaking a wall within minutes, after 1.08 it now takes like 20-60 min (wow, that's like sooo much longer for a determined base raider) of hammering or spamming grenades and gunfire onto the lower paneling and frame of one (!) fence wall or gate.ColdNhungry Feb 14, 2021 @ 1:58pm. Fences come in sections, so from the inside, look at the upper or lower wall/frame with the tool to start dismantling there, then the other half, and finally look at the posts to finish the job.
For the Building up a base part, I don't want Base walls to be climbable, it'd just ruin it. So I didn't know how to add barbed wire to fences... So I went to YouTube, as we all do, and found a video. I start the video and it's covering all of base building, so I set the phone down and go back to harvesting planks for more boxes. I harvest my fill of planks and head back to base. I set my lock and start building some wooden boxes.
